My new-to-me 05 Passat TDI railroad vehicle had its fuel pump become bad 2 days afterward I bought information technology. I drove it from Seattle to McCall Idaho with no issues, loved the car - up till this happened! It doesn't fifty-fifty accept a license plate nonetheless! The repair shop here in my little mountain town wants to charge $one,000 to supersede information technology, including 4.7 hours labor. Is this a off-white cost? Things exercise toll more here since it's isolated but I'm worried the local shop is unfamiliar with my vehicle and may not be doing it most efficiently. Whatsoever tips?

Your car has two fuel pumps. The pump in the tank costs ~$200 and the Tandem Pump on the back of the head is ~$375 for a 18-carat VW replacement. If it is the TP and it is leaking, the seal tin be renewed without removing it from the caput. iv.7 hours seems like a lot to me.

Cheers! Looks similar my car shop needs a melody-upwardly... they tell me they have to remove the fuel tank to do the task. They call information technology the "lift pump" and are charging me $470 for it.

On a railroad vehicle, the lift pump is accessed from the cargo area. It can be replaced in under an hr but the book fourth dimension is probably more than that. There are besides ii relays that come into play. They should confirm that the pump connector gets 12V before replacing the pump.

Afterwards that shop were to accept replaced the pump, they'd probably replace the fuel filter which is more than likely to be the existent problem. Hopefully you tin fing a shop that isn't as greedy and will troubleshoot and treat you adequately.

Do a simple examination:

one. Remove the carpet from the cargo expanse.
2. Remove the round black plastic encompass over the fuel pump.
iii. Heed to the pump when someone else switches the ignition on.
iv. If you hear a momentary buzz listen to what thundershorts said in a higher place and try replacing the fuel filter first.
5. If you don't hear a buzz make sure there'southward ability to the pump; if not, check the fuses and relays.

Permit us know what happens

To check the fuses and relays (bold no power, at the pump connector, when yous turn the cardinal to on:

i. Check fuse #28. If y'all don't get 12V at the fuse, and the fuse is good, replace the 219 relay in the ECM box.

2. if you get 12V here merely not at the pump connector replace the 373 fuel pump relay. Equally a short term fix you can steal the ane labelled cooling fan in the pic ( it is only used for an overheating status IIRC).

My 373 relay failed a few months ago.

The fuel pump and filter got replaced, and labor came to less than the volume rate they initially quoted me - less than 2 hours instead of the 4.7 quoted. Yay! I did not get any details every bit to how they did the work, I'm just glad I have my wheels again. I'm really liking my TDI. Cheers for all the advice and input, anybody!
